The Guiding Principles and Power of Boudoir Photography: Celebrating Empowerment and Inclusivity

In the world of boudoir photography, there are guiding principles that transcend mere aesthetics and technicalities. These principles not only shape our approach to photography but also define our role as creators and advocates of empowerment and inclusivity.

All Bodies Are Welcome: Regardless of color, size, ability, or gender, boudoir photography stands as a beacon of inclusivity. It embraces diversity and celebrates the unique beauty of every individual. As 2SLGBTQ+ friendly practitioners, we strive to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone, free from judgment and discrimination.

Clients’ Gaze: At the heart of boudoir photography lies the empowerment of our clients. It's about capturing their essence, as they see themselves, not as we perceive them. We come in to the studio with bias on how we perceive beauty and that bias is largely influenced by our society - the celebrities we idolize, the overly edited magazine covers… all of that influences our perception. As boudoir photographers, we must relinquish our biases and allow our clients to dictate how they want to be portrayed, respecting their agency and autonomy. Our role is not to impose our ideals of beauty but to facilitate self-expression and self-acceptance. It's about how THEY want to see THEMSELVES not us.

Art: Unlike pornography, which seeks to titillate through explicitness, boudoir photography celebrates the beauty of the human form in its most authentic and unguarded moments, weaving a narrative of self-discovery and empowerment. Each photograph is a testament to the subject's strength, confidence, and individuality.

No Judgement: In our studio, there is no room for judgment or stigma. We celebrate the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, irrespective of their personal preferences or experiences. Every person who steps in front of our camera is treated with respect, kindness, and understanding. In short, we don't "yuck" someone's "yum".

Empowerment and Inclusivity: Becoming a boudoir photographer is not just about mastering technical skills; it's about embracing a philosophy of empowerment and inclusivity. We have the power to uplift and inspire others, to help them reclaim ownership of their bodies and identities.

Rising Tide Raises All Ships: As boudoir photographers, we often find ourselves marginalized or excluded from mainstream photography communities. As a result, it's crucial than ever that we stand together, supporting and uplifting each other. Empowerment should not be reserved for our clients but also shared within our community. It is quite hypocritical of us to say that we empower only some women. By supporting each other, we create a ripple effect of positivity and change, making the world a brighter and more inclusive place.

Boudoir photography is not just a form of artistic expression; it's a catalyst for empowerment and social change. By embracing these guiding principles, I believe that we can harness the transformative power of photography to uplift and inspire individuals, one image at a time.
